Summer School for JLSS Children

A two-week summer program was held from 31 September until 11
October
2009 for underperforming children from Grades One to Three. This program
only included children from the boarding school. A part-time teacher,
Miss Hanan Haddad, was given the task of trying to help those children
academically. House-parents from the boarding department organized
special activities for them to make the summer school interesting. They
were taught in small groups to make it easier for them to learn. While a
few of them were studying with Miss Haddad, the others were doing
activities with house-parents. A teachers' meeting was held on the first
day for the purpose of i

nforming Miss Haddad about the areas of weakness
for each individual child. Teachers who taught the children last year
informed her exactly which areas she needed to address. Schneller School
sponsored this program totally at no cost to parents as they are
unable to afford any fees. Although the duration of the summer school
was short, it provided the children with a positive stimulus, two weeks
before the start of the academic year. Their individual needs were
addressed in a small way, propping them for a better start. Above
all, their learning experience in a very small group may help them
adjust better to a full class situation. The outcome of this program
will be assessed during the first few months of the next academic year.
